Resilience in a Global World: Lessons from Unexpected Journeys
Life abroad often calls for courage, adaptability, and the willingness to start over, again and again. As a global professional, I’ve learned that building a meaningful career in a new country comes with its own set of challenges. But nothing prepared me for the curveball that came in late 2021.
What started as a season of transition quickly became one of the most defining chapters of my life, a journey that would test and deepen my understanding of resilience in ways I never expected.
In late November 2021, my life took an unexpected turn when I received news no one ever wants to hear: I was diagnosed with a rare form of non-Hodgkin lymphoma. This diagnosis brought a wave of uncertainty and forced me to reassess my priorities and approach to life.
Thankfully, the cancer was caught early, and for now, I manage it with mild at-home treatment. Despite a hopeful outlook, learning to live with the uncertainty of what comes next has quietly reshaped my everyday life
As a global HR professional and career resilience coach, navigating uncertainty has always been part of my journey, but this personal health challenge took my understanding to a deeper level
The Universal Language of Resilience
My experience as an immigrant professional, navigating a new career landscape while adapting to unfamiliar cultural environments, had already taught me much about resilience. Facing significant health challenges added yet another profound layer of insight.
Through these trials, I’ve come to define resilience as:
Career resilience is the mental and emotional capacity to navigate personal and professional stress, adapt to uncertainty, and continue growing—no matter where life takes you
Resilience isn’t simply about bouncing back from setbacks; it’s about moving forward with purpose and courage, even when the path ahead is unclear, a reality many of us face in our international careers.
Balancing Career and Life Abroad
Navigating life and career transitions as an immigrant is challenging but can also be incredibly rewarding. Here are five key strategies that have helped me balance my career and personal life effectively:
-
Motivate beyond monetary incentives. Find intrinsic ways to stay inspired and encourage those around you.
-
Prioritize work-life balance. Managing stress and maintaining your well-being is essential for sustainable success.
-
Embrace accountability. Holding yourself and others accountable fosters growth, responsibility, and trust.
-
Balance leadership and productivity. Effectively juggling your own responsibilities while guiding others demonstrates strong leadership and dedication.
-
Build authentic relationships. Genuine connections with colleagues and community members create supportive and meaningful environments.
